Ifrane, altitude 1,650 meters, was built by the French in 1929 as a a summer and winter resort for residents in Fès and Meknès. It is cool in summer and a ski center in the winter. The late King Hassan II had a summer palace here. In the early 1900s a private university was started, Al Akhawayn (The Brothers), with a strong American slant and a number of American teachers. It is expensive with the majority of Moroccan students from Casablanca. Currently there are about 500 students |
