The ferry boat from Dublin arrived at Holyhead on the Isle of
Anglesey which is separated from mainland North Wales by the Menai Strait, a
narrow strip of water crossed by road and rail bridges. Inland
Anglesey is a flat and agrarian
landscape, and is dotted with impressive prehistoric sites. Its best-known
village is Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, a shortened version of perhaps the
world's longest placename -
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwyllllantysiliogogogoch ('St Mary's
[Church] by the white aspen over the whirlpool, and St Tysilio's
[Church] by the red cave').
