Fort Macleod is located in a rich farm and ranch setting, a short drive from some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the Rockies. The combination of vast open prairie, rolling foot hills and snowcapped mountains provides a dramatic setting for the town's natural beauty and history. The old Man River flows through town and has one of the first golf courses in the western Canada.

In 1874 the North West Mounted Police, NWMP, established their first headquarters in this area that is now the Town of Fort Macleod. From this tiny fort in the middle of an ocean of prairie grew the "Red Coat" police force that is synonymous with Canada. The Town of Fort Macleod, Alberta's oldest town, grew out of the need to provide the goods and services required by the NWMP. Fort Macleod's historic Main Street, the Province's only Historic Area, is a legacy to the early days of commerce in Alberta with over 30 architecturally significant buildings dating from the 1890's to 1920's. Fort Macleod has been the cross roads of commerce since its inception and remains a hub of commerce and tourism.
