Birding in Northern Alberta

Snowy Owl

Northern Alberta and southern Northwest Territory offers birdwatchers a mind-boggling array of waterfowl, shorebirds and raptors and many excellent opportunities for sightings.  Birds of prey such as bald and golden eagles, great-horned owls, rough-legged hawks, northern hawk owls, kestrels and merlins are summer residents. In winter, the great grey owl and snowy owl are frequently seen along roadsides, perched in the trees.

Trumpeter Swan

Most species of waterfowl, including trumpeter and tundra swans and pelicans, nest in many wetlands dotted through the landscape. Muddy shorelines host shorebirds such as the lesser yellowlegs and spotted sandpiper scurrying in search of insects. Ravens are year-round residents whose unusual collection of voices breaks the early morning silence.
