This is definitely a trip for nature lovers, so as you drive, watch for large animals that may be hunting or grazing in the wide ditches and meadows. Moose, deer, bison and black bear find the succulent plant growth along the highway a tasty treat. In the winter, small herds of woodland caribou may venture onto the roadway as they move through the area.

Keep an eye out for the smaller animals too, such as fox, beaver and woodchucks. The chubby woodchuck, or marmot, lives in burrows much like its smaller cousin the ground squirrel. Most roadside streams, ponds and dugouts will have a resident family of very industrious beaver. Their construction projects are amazing feats of engineering skill. The occasional lucky observer will see mink, marten or river otter.
