SECOND GENERATION


James Brady was a native of Dublin, Ireland.  He was born 7 Jan 1845, emigrating with his parents to America in 1850 and settled in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.  He came to Luzerne County, Pennsylvania 13 Aug 1865.   James Brady was a railroad yardmaster in the employ of the Delaware & Hudson Railroad Co. at Wilkes-Barre of which he was a resident. 

His parents were Terrance and Mary (Fitzpatrick) Brady. 

James Brady married Laura Bertles on 16 Feb 1871 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.  Laura was born in Pennsylvania whose parents were Jacob and Elizabeth (Wambold) Bertles.

James Brady and Laura Bertles had the following children:

Civil War Service:  James Brady was a boatman when the Civil War broke out having learned to love the country of his adoption.  He promptly enlisted at Wilkes-Barre joining Co. D 9th Pa V. I. on 15 Oct 1861.  In due time he was promoted to Corporal and to Sergeant in Oct 1862.  He was detailed to General Clay and served for two months.  In Jun 1863, he was furloughed for thirty days from Chattanooga and discharged from his enlistment in Knoxville, Tenn. to re-enlist as a veteran the same day in his old command.  He actively participated in all the engagements of his command from Louisville, Kentucky to Savannah, Georgia, and also Johnston's surrender.  At the close of the war he was honorably discharge 29 Jul 1865 at Durham, North Carolina.
His brother, Patrick, served in 62 D PA. V. I. and was wounded at Antietam.  His wife had two brothers in service, Henry who served in a New York Regiment was killed in front of Petersburg and John belonged to Company D 9th Reg. Penna.
